The Foundation

The Fondazione Musei Senesi is the museum network of the territory of Siena. Since 2003 it has been committed to promoting awareness and enhancing the value of the territory, consolidating the museum system set up by the Province in the 1990s.

Today, the Fondazione Musei Senesi coordinates and unites over forty museums, located in numerous “ordinary” villages dotting the Sienese countryside. Visiting them is a special experience, a discovery of so many extraordinary stories.

The “museo diffuso”

The Fondazione Musei Senesi is a non-profit institution involving about 30 Municipalities, over 40 museums and other public and private organizations. The Fondazione’s work is based on the concept of the “museo diffuso” – non-traditional museums that utilize a variety of spaces -, aiming to foster integration between collections and their original contexts, local communities, traditions and landscapes, research institutes, the business community, tourism and the creative industry in the territory. The museum system ideally brings together the different “souls” of Sienese territory under the umbrella of a shared identity: from the Elsa Valley to the Chianti, from the Crete chalk hills to the Merse Valley, from the Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata to the Chiana Valley and, finally, the area’s principal city, Siena.

The FMS network unites museums dedicated to various aspects of the material and intangible heritage of the territory of Siena: valuable archeological finds, exceptionally beautiful masterpieces of art, curious scientific and naturalistic collections, and captivating historical and ethnographic collections.

Objectives

The Fondazione Musei Senesi works every day alongside the network’s museums, playing an active role in the development, enhancement and promotion of the territory. To this end, we conceive and carry out cultural projects in collaboration with municipal administrations, local communities and other partners, fostering a system-based approach; we propose dissemination and informational initiatives; we support museums in obtaining funds and activating collaborations; we develop information systems and technological applications; we carry out educational, research and training activities and support cultural accessibility and citizen participation.
Our network-based approach allows us to optimize resources and strengthen the institution’s collaborative interdisciplinary vocation.

Mission

Fondazione Musei Senesi aims to be a space for dialogue, sharing and exchange in which museum professionals, administrators, local communities and museum visitors participate. Our objective is to assist museums to help them increasingly develop as spaces of learning and receptivity, where cultural heritage and the stories of the people who have contributed to its creation and conservation are highlighted, where active citizenship is put into practice, and where people can “feel at home.”

Vision

In the pursuit of its identified aims, the Fondazione is committed to:

  • optimizing the use of resources, generating economies of scale, purpose and specialization;
  • raising the quality level and standards of museums, archives and libraries and of all the services they provide;
  • promoting the heritage, collections and activities of its associated museums;
  • augmenting the cultural, social and economic impact of the territory’s cultural and environmental heritage, incentivizing forms of joint management and citizen participation.

The Fondazione Musei Senesi follows the principles of the “participatory foundation” juridical model; it is non-profit and cannot distribute profits.

In short, FMS works to support and promote, in every way, museum, archival, library, monumental and environmental structures located in the city of Siena and the Municipalities of its Province; to enhance the value of cultural assets within the sphere of promotion, conservation, restoration, cataloguing, exhibitions, augmenting of collections and organization of educational and informational activities; and to carry out, support and promote scientific research. The associated museums share its mission and, alongside their own projects, are coordinated by FMS to carry out system-wide projects and are committed to reciprocal collaboration.
